Dear friends,
We are pleased to announce the course "Computer Algebra Applications",
to be held in Laredo, Spain, during the first week of September, 1997
(monday to friday). The course will be part of the University of Cantabria
Summer Program, with the support of the Erasmus Network "Galois" and the
Esprit IV project "FRISCO". It aims to present a panorama of technological
applications of Computer Algebra.

PROGRAMME

9-9:30 Participant registration
9:30-11:30 Solving non-linear systems of equations for applications (L.
Gonzalez Vega, University of Cantabria, Spain)
11:30-12 Break
12-14 Symbolic methods for visualizing scalar fields. Applications to
medical data.(C. Bajaj, University of Purdue, USA)

Tuesday, Sept. 2

Eindhoven
Technological University, The Nederlands)
11:30-12 Break
12-14 Computer Algebra Applications for the curriculum in the
universities of the Galois network.
(T. Recio, Universidad de Cantabria, Spain).

Moreover, two afternoon sessions will be organized with the
participation
of engineers working in industrial problems requiring Computer Algebra
tools.

The course is not specifically addressed to Computer Algebra
specialists,
but also to those with reasonable mathematical skills (engineers,
scientists, students ), interested in learning about how this tool can
help in analyzing and solving technological problems.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Laredo is a village (10.000 inhabitants) about half way between Bilbao
and Santander  (approx. distance 45 kilometers to each of these cities;
there are frequent buses serving Laredo to and from Bilbao or Santander). It
has a wonderful beach, several kilometers long, at walking distance from the
course classroom in the Casa de Cultura.

LODGING
There is a limited number of student-style rooms provided by the
University
at specially reduced rates, that will be assigned on a first come first
served basis. Price for ONE WEEK (from sunday night to saturday morning:
no other possibilities are regarded) per person in a double room (no single
rooms available) is 12.000 pesetas (about 75 ECUS). This includes just
the room. If you are interested in this accomodation, fill in the
corresponding entry in the application form below.

But there are many other (more expensive and comfortable) choices, in
this case you should write or phone to:

Oficina de Turismo del Ayuntamiento de Laredo.
Alameda de Miramar, s/n. Laredo (Spain).
Phone: 34-42-611096

or contact with a travel agency on your own.

Laredo is a traditional fishermen village and there are many low priced
typical restaurants and cafes around the Casa de Cultura.

REGISTRATION
Course participation is open. During the first week of september a few
other summer courses will take place in the same location. Due to space
limitations in the Casa de Cultura, only a number of applicants will be
allowed to register.
For this reason early applications are highly encouraged!!

All applications will be answered. Those selected applicants will have
to formally register with
the University of Cantabria, making a bank transfer AFTER May 15, 1997,
for the total amount (fee+accomodation (when applicable)). Details will
be given in the acceptance letter.

A diploma will be issued to all registered participants the last day of
the course.

FEES
There is a tuition fee of 20.000 pesetas (about 125 ECUS) per person .
