The Practice of Mathematics in Portugal

Conference integrated in the celebrations of the
World Mathematical Year

Óbidos, 16-18 November 2000
Auditório da Casa da Música

Conference program

Historical studies on Science have developed considerably in the last decades. The number of subjects and personalities studied has increased substantially, and historiographic techniques have become more demanding and sophisticated.

In Portugal, however, the impact of this greater maturity in scientific historiography has not been felt much. There have been and continue to be isolated cases of people doing good quality work, but, in general, portuguese scientific historiography remains under the influence of views proposed at the beginning of the century. (One exception is the history of navigation.)

The result of this state of affairs is that Portugal's scientific history (in particular in Mathematics) is still not well known. This is even more worrisome as several foreign scholars have been doing very interesting work concerning the understanding of portuguese reality, but this work remains generally unknown in our country.

The main purpose of this conference is to gather reputed international experts and several portuguese scholars, so that recent work on the History of Mathematics can be presented, in particular about Portugal.
