How to get there.

Google map of Figueira da Foz.
There is no airport at Figueira da Foz. One has to go through the airports of Porto or Lisbon. Porto is a little bit closer, and many low-cost airlines fly there.
Then, in most cases you have to take a train (see schedule) to Coimbra-B (not to be confused with Coimbra-A). At Coimbra-B, you have to take a regional train to Figueira-da-Foz: click here for the schedule of this second part of the trip.

From Porto airport, you can take the metro in front of the airport, and get down at "Campanhă", which is the main railway station : the ticket (buy a "Z4") costs 2 euros, and can be purchased at automatic machines (keep your ticket, using it again shall save you 50c). Do not confuse with the station "Campainha", which is on the same line! Two people need to buy two tickets. A taxi from the airport to the railway station should cost less than 20 euros.
In the railway station, most ticket sellers speak reasonably english, spanish and/or french. Trains might be crowded on Sunday evening, and since the number of seats is limited, it might be that they will not let you in the first train - or at least require you to buy first class ticket. There are three types of trains to Coimbra-B: the alpha-pendular (slightly faster: 16 euros, 55min), the Intercidade (cheaper, just a bit slower: 11 euros, 1h05min), and the Regional trains (much slower). At Coimbra-B, you have to take a regional train to Figueira-da-Foz (about 1h).

From Lisbon airport , take a bus or taxi to Lisboa Oriente railway station. Most ticket sellers in the railway station speak reasonably english, spanish and/or french. Trains might be crowded on Sunday evening, and since the number of seats is limited, it might be that they will not let you in the first train - or at least require you to buy first class ticket. There are three types of trains to Coimbra-B: the alpha-pendular (slightly faster, and more comfortable : 20 euros, 1h40min), the Intercidade (cheaper, but a bit slower : 16 euros, 1h55min), and the Regional trains (much slower). At Coimbra-B, you have to take a regional train to Figueira-da-Foz (about 1h). Depending on your schedule, the fastest trip might even be one with a change in Alfarelos instead of Coimbra-B: ask to the ticket seller in Lisbon for the best option.

From Lisbon, there are also a few buses (last at 18:30) that go directly to Figueira in about three hours, see Rede Expressos . It might be more convenient than the train if the schedule match your need. Buses only depart from the Lisboa Sete Rios Bus Station. To get there from the airport take the Aeroshuttle bus (CARRIS Nș96) which leaves every 30 minutes from outside the Arrivals hall.
Figueira is famous for its spendid beach, and the XIX century bourgeois architecture of its downtown. Next to Figueira is the city of Coimbra, one the oldest university in Europe, and the narrow streets of its medieval districts.
