Urk] Friday, 10 October 1997 For sure I'm not as pathetic as Michael who has spent the last 3 days playing poker in a Tokyo hotel room with friends and little 'brotherly shove'. I've been doing what exciting and with it people do - playing Dungeons and Dragons on their own in a hotel room with a laptop. Occasionally I'd see Craig talking on his mobile in between tapping away at his 'Consolidated Earnings and Profits 98' Excel spreadsheet. The Japanese don't appear to have gone for my kind of blonde. They say I'm not a natural blonde like Mika Hakkinen. Arriving at the circuit Patrick gave me his usual warm welcome. 'Just go out there and get those 6 points'. Which seemed strange as I only need to score one more point than Michael. I was glad to see during the free practice that the Bridgestone threat didn't emerge. It wouldn't be right if one of those nobodys came between me and my destiny. Saturday, 11 October 1997 Still no rain to show off my driving finesse but I didn't need it as I comfortably took pole. Michael is alongside me and for sure this position wasn't good for me last year but this year everything is going my way. But where is HHF? He should be between me and Eddie. Its his job to be my No 2 and he isn't doing it properly. He doesn't appear to have thrown his whole effort behind my first WC. I can't think why not, after all once I'd managed to outpsych him and put him down at every occassion I then became very nice and friendly to him. He should be protecting me from Eddie. Eddie has had it in for me all season and lives to take out Williams cars. It's not fair!! They've disqualified me!! For running through a stupid yellow flag. Again. A driver should be allowed to decide what's serious and whether he should slow down or not - not these Steward people. I was so angry I even made nasty doodles over the FIA logo on their letterhead officially informing me. If they're going to pick on every little transgression I make then I'm leaving F1 for another race series that will let me away with it. Craig eventually talked me out of it: "But we've got contracts!". We have decided to appeal so that I can race tomorrow and ensure that Michael gets no points. Ha ha! Sunday, 12 October Patrick looks devastated by the news. He keeps telling HHF that its up to him. I assume he means by aiding me obstruct the Ferraris. We came up with an excellent tactical plan. Those who refer to me as a Williams Renault safety car driver just do not understand the complexity of it. There was a slight snag in the plan. For sure the start went as planned but instead of drivers overtaking Michael, along comes Eddie and overtakes ME! Even worse, after the pit stops Michael goes past. My pitcrew must get faster as the next one took even longer. You'd think they didn't want me to win. I don't understand how Eddie could just give away a race win like that just because Ferrari asked him to. A top driver like Michael should win on his own efforts. And where the hell was HHF anyway? Afterwards Frank appeared strangely unmoved by my woes but I guess that's just Frank being stoic. Though he was looking unusually fond of HHF. He said he'd give it a few days and then rescind my appeal. 'After all, we wouldn't want to be deprived of your masterplan for Jerez now, would we' he said. 'Perhaps this one should involve going quickly' he suggested. We'll come up with something special to beat Ferrari at Jerez. For sure. --------------- Back issues can be found at... http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~mbyrne/ Thanks to Lorcan de Brun for new pic of JV's roots. Cheers Lorcan.
