We are presenting this volume of research articles and personal recollections to our colleague Professor J. A. Sampaio Martins, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. We thank all the mathematicians who joined us in this celebration, particularly Professors F. R. Dias Agudo, D. E. Edmunds and F. J. Craveiro de Carvalho, whom we invited expressly for the occasion.
