The city of Coimbra has been occupied since pre-historic times
and the Celts occupied the city before the Roman conquest.
With an history of more than two thousand years it is a modern
city with one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Arriving by plane
In order to arrive at the city of Coimbra you need to use one of the
airports Lisbon
or Porto.
To go from any airport to Coimbra the best option is the bus. You
can use RedeExpressos or
Flixbus that will take you
directly from the airport to the city of Coimbra.
From the airport of Lisbon to Coimbra, use RedeExpressos
or Flixbus.
From the airport of Porto to Coimbra, use RedeExpressos
or Flixbus.
You can also take the train to
go from Lisbon or Porto to Coimbra, but then you need to take also
the subway from both airports to the railway station of the city.
The MetroBus,
the new rapid transportation system of Coimbra, is not yet fully
functioning
but in December he will connect the Railway Station of Coimbra
(Coimbra-B) to Praça da República (station "República"),
near the University of Coimbra (the main location, also called "Polo I"").
So you should study the map of the
network and the schedules,
but these are not yet the ones that will work in December.
MetroBus connects also many other locations namely the city centre,
the arrival places of the buses and some hotels,
like the old and famous Hotel Astória.
It is the fastest means of transport within the city of Coimbra.
