I decline all review requests with short deadlines, from journals requiring payment from authors, or those that breach the implicit boundaries of conflict of interest in peer review. This includes submissions from close collaborators, students, or researchers with whom I have personal disagreements or scientific divergences.

Current PhD candidates funded by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT)

A crucial career step in developing independence is the PhD period, during which students are trained by their supervisors to become independent researchers, Studies in Higher Education (2024).

Works not involving my authorship:            Work not involving my authorship:

Former PhD candidates

  • J. Rivero-Dones, University of Cádiz, Spain, Sobresaliente Cum Laude, May 2024, advisor 2: M. Villegas-Vallecillos
  • D. Mbouna, University of Coimbra, Aprovado com Distinção e Louvor, March 2021, advisor 1: J. Petronilho

I only co-supervise PhD candidates enrolled in internationally recognized programs, provided that I am one of no more than two supervisors, and that my involvement is active and essential-not merely formal-with sustained weekly collaboration throughout the project.  I do not accept 'postdoctoral students', as I fundamentally reject the concept itself. I oppose any model that treats postdoctoral researchers as subordinates rather than recognizing them as equal participants in the advancement of scientific research.
