Following is a list of educational listservs and subscription information. Thanks to Andy Carvin, CPB Media Specialist and owner of the WWWEDU listserv, for giving me permission to repost the list here. Try a few over the holidays to get a flavor of the discussions, but be forewarned, popular lists like EDTECH can add 50 or 60 messages a day to your email box!

>Online Discussion Groups and Electronic Journals
>(latest revision: October 8, 1996)
>From: Andy Carvin acarvin@kudzu.cnidr.org

> THE INTERNET contains literally thousands of special interest
> discussion groups, each individually controlled by a program known
> as a listserver (commonly referred to as a listserv or a list).
> Discussions are often moderated by a list owner, but this is not
> always the case. Most lists can be provided to the user either in a
> digest form or on a post-by-post basis. Any member of the list may
> take part in a conversation or begin a new topic. Listservs also
> distribute electronic journals (commonly known as e-journals or
> e-texts), moderated on-line magazines usually dedicated to a
> specific area of research. Lists and e-journals are joined by
> posting email to the list address and writing the following in the
> first line of the actual posting:
>
> subscribe [name of list] [your first name] [your last name]
>
> Nothing else may be written within the message page. For example, if
> dbowie@stardust.com wanted to join the Education Technology list
> (EDTECH), he would send mail to listserv@msu.edu and write the
> following within the the post:
>
> subscribe EDTECH David Bowie
>
> The listserv program does the rest.
>
> Presented here is my personal collection of education-centered
> discussion groups. This is by no means a comprehensive list, for two
> reasons. First, lists come and go, so it is virtually impossible
> keep a truly up-to-date list collection, as hard as one may try.
> Second, because the term 'education' covers a wide variety of list
> types (K-12, special ed, higher ed, graduate research, etc.), a list
> of education lists takes on a mind of its own when one attempts to
> assemble every listserv associated with education. Therefore, my
> focus of this list will be general education, K-12 education,
> education technology and education reform.
