Coupling of the Magnetic Field to the Outer Atmosphere

A. Title and B. de Pontieu, Stanford Lockhead Institute for Space Research, Palo Alto, CA, USA

High-resolution magnetograms have revealed a sea of emerging flux on a range of scales from long lived active regions on the largest scale to very transient regions on the scale of granulation.  Amazingly all of these scales interact so that even very smallest and very ephemeral magnetic features can couple into the corona.  Some small features can serve to form magnetic topologies that change the coupling of acoustic modes in the photosphere to chromosphere and transition region.  With the successful launch of Hinoday (Solar B) new high resolution imaging, vector magnetograms, EUV spectra, and X-ray images that are continuous in time and free from seeing will revolutionize our understanding of the Chromosphere, transition region, and corona.  Movies with be shown that illustrate some of the effects of scale coupling.
